Case Study 3: Drywall Company, Michigan, three crews
Phil's problem was really taking a toll on his health. He had gotten into a bad series of turnovers with workers. Drywall isn't the most glamorous job, but he had steady projects and competitive pay for anyone ready to work.
He had three solid crew leaders who did a fantastic job at training for all quality finishes. It was his general workers that continued to worry him. Not getting much time to know them, it made it hard to build relationships and know they were doing what they should be. He needed to do something, because jobs were taking way too long and vehicle expenses were getting much higher.
He installed Contractor GPS into all of his trucks and vans. What he found out was staggering. He was paying overtime each week to get jobs finished. When he added up the time vehicles were actually parked at jobs and time it took to drive them there, he wasn't even getting an eight hour day on the books. Coffee breaks at the local gas station, lunch breaks over 90 minutes... Phil felt betrayed when one of the biggest slackers was a crew leader.
Contractor GPS helped identify every area that needed improvement. He also had the reliability and accuracy he needed to hold his staff accountable.
Phil had to confront his staff which was tough at first, but the overall savings and trust he acquired are still paying off.
Phil projects a savings of $12,000 for 2008 on overtime and fuel reductions.
